overcoming addictions

Addictions Are More than Just Drugs

When you ask most people what additions are they’ll tend to mention drugs, gambling and smoking but actually anything can become addictive once your brain's Reward Pathway takes over… I’ve personally worked with people addicted to exercise, psychic hotlines, shopping and more!

An addiction is something you feel compelled to do, no longer want to do and feel guilty (even angry) afterwards. An addict is not in conscious control of their addiction, regardless of what they may initially think.

The Reward Pathway is designed for the survival of the species whose three key needs are food, shelter and procreation. It releases dopamine and serotonin as needed; it is controlled by the limbic system as it is primitive and survivalist.

All Behaviours Have a Purpose

Trying to remove an addiction without identifying its purpose is fundamentally wrong to brain function. All behaviours have a purpose, so for what purpose that behaviour? What not being met that has led your brain to look for an alternative reward/escape process?

Overcoming addiction is not about withdrawal
