What is imposter syndrome and how can NLP help?

Impostor syndrome refers to a psychological phenomenon where individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of their competence and success. Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes originally identified Imposter syndrome in 1978. People experiencing impostor syndrome often attribute their achievements to luck or external factors rather than acknowledging their own skills and abilities. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and a constant fear of being exposed as a "fake."

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a set of tools and techniques aimed at understanding and influencing human behaviour, communication, and thought patterns. While NLP may not be a recognised therapeutic approach in the same way as traditional psychotherapy and CBT, it has been shown as an effective approach to address issues like impostor syndrome.

Here's how NLP may be applied:

1.      Changing Thought Patterns: NLP emphasises the impact of language and thought patterns on behaviour. By becoming aware of negative self-talk and reframing it into more positive and empowering language, individuals may be able to change their thought patterns associated with impostor syndrome.

2.      Visualizations: NLP often involves guided visualisations to create positive mental images. Individuals can visualise themselves succeeding, feeling confident, and internalising a sense of accomplishment. This can help counteract the negative images and self-doubt associated with impostor syndrome.

3.      Anchoring: NLP introduces the concept of anchoring, where a positive emotional state is associated with a specific gesture, touch, or word. By creating anchors for confidence and success, individuals can use these anchors to shift their emotional state when facing impostor syndrome feelings.

4.      Modelling Success: NLP encourages the modelling of successful individuals. By studying the behaviours, beliefs, and strategies of people who have overcome similar challenges, individuals with impostor syndrome can gain insights and adopt more empowering approaches.

 


NLP is described as “the study of the structure of subjective experience”. NLP is not a model of repair... it is a model of acquisition ... a generative model. People are not broken and do not need fixing. Human beings work perfectly and everything they do represents an achievement. The methodology and technology of NLP does not focus on what's wrong or diagnosing people: rather, it's about how to get to where you want to go. The tools mentioned above outline methods of generative change that enable people to overcome their limiting beliefs and achieve their aims.
