Benefits of Practising Shibashi Qigong

Taiji Qigong Shibashi, also known as Shibashi Tai Chi Qigong or Tai Chi Chi-Kung in 18-Movement, is a gentle and flowing form of qigong originally developed by Prof. Lin Housheng in 1979 based on his extensive experience as a renowned qigong master, and combines the principles of tai chi. chi-kung, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Practicing Shibashi Qigong offers numerous benefits for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Some of these benefits include:

1.      Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion: The gentle, flowing movements of Shibashi Qigong help to stretch and mobilise the joints, enhancing flexibility and promoting a better range of motion.

2.      Enhanced Balance and Coordination: Practicing Shibashi Qigong requires practitioners to maintain balance and coordination throughout the movements, which can help improve balance and proprioception over time.

3.      Stress Reduction: Like other forms of qigong and Tai Chi, Shibashi Qigong incorporates deep breathing, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness, which can help reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

4.      Increased Energy Levels: Regular practice of Shibashi Qigong can help improve the flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body, leading to increased energy levels and vitality.

5.      Boosted Immune Function: Some research suggests that qigong practice, including Shibashi Qigong, may have positive effects on the immune system, potentially boosting immune function and promoting overall health.

6.      Pain Management: Shibashi Qigong has been found to be effective in reducing chronic pain, such as back pain and arthritis pain, by promoting relaxation, improving circulation, and reducing muscle tension.

7.      Improved Posture: The emphasis on alignment and proper body mechanics in Shibashi Qigong can help improve posture and alignment, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues and promoting better overall body mechanics.

8.      Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: Through the focus on breath, movement, and mindfulness, Shibashi Qigong helps to cultivate a deeper awareness of the mind-body connection, promoting greater self-awareness and presence.

9.      Mood Regulation: Regular practice of Shibashi Qigong has been shown to have positive effects on mood regulation, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and promoting a more balanced emotional state.

10.  Social Connection: Joining a Shibashi Qigong class or group can provide opportunities for social interaction and support, which can have additional benefits for mental health and well-being.

Overall, Shibashi Qigong offers a holistic approach to health and wellness, promoting balance and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit. It can be practised by people of all ages and fitness levels and can be easily adapted to suit individual needs and preferences. Prof. Lin has developed a total of eight sets of Shibashi qigong, each having eighteen postures as the name suggests. Sets one and two are currently the most popular; set eight is a compilation of Prof. Lin’s movements from the previous seven sets, so a sort of “greatest hits”.
